Amniocentesis as a pregnancy test

A clinician collects the fluid with a needle guided by ultrasound. The specific laboratory analysis depends on the clinical question, so an amniocentesis does not automatically test for every possible condition.

Screening estimates whether a pregnancy has a higher or lower chance of certain conditions. Amniocentesis examines material from the pregnancy and can provide a diagnostic answer for the condition being analysed, although the test still has defined limits.

It may be discussed after a screening result, an ultrasound finding, a previous affected pregnancy, or a known family genetic change. The available laboratory options can include chromosome analysis, microarray, or a targeted test when a particular condition is suspected.

Ask exactly which condition or genetic change the proposed analysis can detect and what a normal, positive, or uncertain result would mean. Balance the information you could gain against the procedure's limitations and small additional chance of pregnancy complications.

You can request time with a fetal medicine specialist or genetic counsellor before deciding. Clarify when sampling would occur, when results may return, whether more than one analysis is planned, and how each possible outcome could affect pregnancy care or preparation after birth.

Following amniocentesis, contact the maternity team promptly for vaginal bleeding, clear fluid leakage, fever, chills, regular contractions, or pain that persists or becomes stronger. Get urgent help for severe pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, breathing difficulty, or sudden serious illness.
