What should you know about Aldara use?

Apply it only to the area your clinician identified. The amount, application days, and treatment length can differ between conditions, so follow your own label rather than another person's routine.

Imiquimod stimulates a local immune response in the treated skin. Redness, mild swelling, flaking, crusting, itching, or tenderness may develop where it is applied; these changes can reflect treatment activity, but intensity still matters. A strong reaction is not proof that treatment is working better.

The medicine is prescribed for selected diagnoses, not for an unexplained spot. Skin that looks similar can have different causes, and the treatment plan may vary with the site, cream strength, and reason for use.

Use a thin layer as directed, wash your hands after application, and avoid the eyes, lips, inside of the nose, and other areas not included in the plan. Do not add an airtight dressing unless your prescriber told you to. Follow the supplied instructions for when to wash the cream off.

If you miss an application, check the patient leaflet or contact the prescribing clinic instead of doubling the next amount. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, breastfeeding, immune conditions, recent procedures on the area, and all creams or medicines used there. Protect treated skin from unnecessary sun exposure.

Pause and contact the prescribing clinician promptly if pain is difficult to manage, the skin becomes extensively raw or weeping, swelling interferes with normal activity, or you develop fever, marked fatigue, or other flu-like symptoms. Pus, spreading warmth, or worsening redness beyond the treated area can suggest infection and also needs assessment.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, faintness, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. These are warning signs of a serious allergic reaction rather than an expected local effect.

Confirm the exact boundary of the treatment area, the application schedule, when the cream should be removed, and which skin changes should trigger a pause. Ask whether moisturisers, cosmetics, shaving, sexual contact, swimming, or sun exposure require adjustments for the treated site.
