Airplane nausea: what may help and when to get care

Short answer
Airplane nausea often comes from motion, anxiety, food, or dehydration, but persistent or severe symptoms may have another cause.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Motion clue
- Symptoms worsen with turbulence or visual movement
- Gentle intake
- Small sips and bland food

- Persistent vomiting or concerning associated symptoms
The short answer
Turbulence and the mismatch between what your eyes see and your inner ear senses can trigger motion sickness. A heavy meal, alcohol, strong smells, overheating, migraine, acid reflux, low blood glucose, or an illness that began around the trip can also produce nausea.
Clues from the symptom pattern
Motion-related nausea may come with sweating, pallor, dizziness, yawning, or vomiting and often worsens during turbulence. Burning behind the breastbone or a sour taste suggests reflux may be contributing. Diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, or fever point away from simple air sickness and toward an infection or food-related illness.
The relationship to meals and medicines matters. People using glucose-lowering treatment should consider low blood glucose when nausea comes with shaking, sweating, hunger, or confusion and follow their personal correction plan. New nausea after starting a medicine also warrants checking its instructions or speaking with a pharmacist.
What to do on the plane
Sit upright, support your head, direct cool air toward your face, and look at a stable point or close your eyes. Take small sips of water or oral rehydration fluid rather than drinking quickly. Bland food may be easier to tolerate; avoid a rich meal, alcohol, and strong odours until the feeling settles.
If you often become motion sick, ask a pharmacist before travel about a suitable preventive medicine and its timing. Sedating products can impair coordination and should not be mixed with alcohol. Move carefully around the cabin because dizziness and turbulence increase the chance of falling.
When to seek help
Notify cabin crew promptly for chest pressure, severe breathlessness, fainting, confusion, weakness on one side, trouble speaking, blood in vomit, intense or worsening abdominal pain, or a sudden severe headache. These features need assessment and are not explained by routine motion sickness.
After landing, obtain medical advice if vomiting continues, you cannot keep fluids down, urine becomes very dark or infrequent, fever persists, the eyes or skin look yellow, or nausea repeatedly occurs without travel. Babies, older adults, pregnant people, and those with chronic illness can become unwell from fluid loss more readily.
Useful questions for your clinician
Ask whether your pattern sounds motion-related, whether any regular medicine could contribute, which anti-nausea option is compatible with your health, and what plan to follow if symptoms recur. Mention abdominal pain, bowel changes, fever, pregnancy possibility, and recent food exposures.

Questions people ask
Where should I sit if flights make me nauseated?
A seat near the wings may feel less movement. Looking forward, supporting the head, and using cool airflow can also reduce sensory conflict.
Is every episode of nausea on a plane motion sickness?
No. Digestive illness, reflux, migraine, low blood glucose, pregnancy, medicines, anxiety, and dehydration can also cause nausea during a journey.
What should I drink after vomiting?
Take frequent small sips of water or oral rehydration fluid. Seek help if fluids will not stay down or signs of dehydration develop.
