Short answer

An AirLife incentive spirometer is a breathing exercise device used to encourage slow, deep inhalation and support lung expansion during recovery.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the device shows

The clear chamber contains a moving marker or piston that responds to the volume of air you draw in. A separate guide may help you keep the inhalation slow rather than sharp. The reading is a practice target, not a diagnosis and not a measure to compare with another person. After an operation, illness, or a period of limited movement, regular deep breaths can help you follow the breathing plan given by your care team.

How to use it

Sit upright and hold the device level. Seal your lips around the mouthpiece, breathe out normally, then inhale slowly through the mouthpiece so the indicator rises in a controlled way. Hold the breath briefly if your clinician has advised this, remove the mouthpiece, and breathe out gently. Repeat the prescribed routine, resting if you feel light-headed. Coughing gently afterwards may help clear mucus. Clean and store the device as directed, and do not share it.

When to seek care

Stop and seek prompt medical help for severe or worsening breathlessness, chest pain, blue or grey lips, fainting, new confusion, or coughing blood. Contact your clinician if you develop fever, increasing chest discomfort, worsening cough, or cannot use the device because breathing is difficult. A device reading that is lower than your personal target is a reason to discuss your technique and symptoms, not to force a deeper breath.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what target and schedule fit your recovery, whether you should hold each breath, and which symptoms mean you should stop. Confirm how to clean the mouthpiece and whether pain control or a different position would make the exercises easier.

Questions people ask

Does an incentive spirometer test lung disease?

No. It guides breathing practice; formal lung testing uses other equipment and clinical assessment.

What if I feel dizzy?

Pause, breathe normally, and sit safely. Tell your clinician if dizziness returns or does not settle.
