An Age Spot Is Peeling: Causes and Next Steps

A solar lentigo is generally flat and smooth. Flaking over a brown patch may come from dryness, rubbing, sunburn, or irritation from a new skin product. A rough sun-related growth or another skin condition may also have been mistaken for an age spot.

Recent treatment changes the context. Expected surface shedding can follow a clinician-performed peel, freezing, or an energy-based procedure, while forceful picking can prolong inflammation. Without a recent procedure, recurring scale deserves closer inspection rather than repeated exfoliation.

Pause scrubs, retinoids, acids, and fragranced products on the affected area. Wash gently, pat dry, and use a plain moisturiser that does not sting. Do not pull away attached skin or apply a home chemical peel. Protect the site from sunlight while the surface barrier recovers.

Photograph the mark in even lighting and observe whether peeling settles after the suspected irritant is stopped. If a professional procedure caused it, follow the supplied aftercare and contact the treating clinic if the reaction is more intense or lasts longer than they advised.

Book a dermatologist visit if scale repeatedly returns, the patch grows or thickens, its border becomes irregular, several colours appear, or it starts itching, hurting, crusting, oozing, or bleeding. Obtain urgent care for rapidly spreading redness, marked swelling, blistering, pus, fever, or severe pain after a product or procedure.

Ask whether the mark is truly a solar lentigo, which products should remain paused, and what healing changes are expected.
