What to do after razor bumps appear

A cool compress can ease burning, followed by a light fragrance-free moisturiser. Do not dig out trapped hairs with a needle or squeeze pus-filled bumps, as this adds injury and can promote infection, dark marks, or scars.

A closely cut hair can curve back into the skin or grow sideways, producing an inflamed ingrown hair. This is called pseudofolliculitis and is especially troublesome when hair is coarse or curly. Tiny surface cuts and friction from repeated blade passes can add redness and stinging.

Folliculitis can present with tender or pus-filled bumps centred on follicles. Keratosis pilaris produces persistent rough plugs and is not caused by a recent shave, although shaving may make the texture more obvious. The pattern and timing help separate these problems.

Soften the hair with warm water and apply a lubricating shaving gel. Follow the direction of growth, use light pressure, avoid stretching the skin, and limit repeated passes over one spot. Rinse the blade between strokes and store it somewhere dry.

A sharp, clean razor or an electric trimmer that leaves a little stubble may be less irritating than an extremely close shave. If bumps repeatedly follow hair removal, a dermatologist can discuss topical treatment or longer-term options such as laser hair removal, taking hair colour and skin tone into account.

Arrange an appointment for recurring painful bumps, spreading redness, persistent pus, deep lumps, or dark marks and raised scars that continue to build. A clinician can distinguish ingrown hairs from bacterial or fungal folliculitis and choose treatment accordingly.

Seek prompt care if redness expands quickly, pain becomes severe, the skin feels hot, red streaks appear, or you develop fever or feel unwell. These features can accompany a spreading infection rather than uncomplicated shaving irritation.

Ask whether the lesions are ingrown hairs or folliculitis, which active ingredients suit your skin, and how long to pause shaving. If you develop pigment changes easily, ask how to calm inflammation without adding irritation and whether a trimmer or laser approach is appropriate.
