Dark Spots After Pimples: What to Do

A flat dark spot after a pimple is often post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and usually fades gradually with careful skin care. Avoid squeezing or scrubbing the area, treat ongoing acne gently and use broad-spectrum sunscreen every day. A raised, indented, painful or changing lesion may represent something other than a simple pigment mark and deserves assessment.

Inflammation from a pimple can stimulate extra pigment production as the area heals. The resulting mark is flat and may appear brown, grey or deeper than the surrounding skin, depending on skin tone and pigment depth. Sun and visible light can make the contrast more noticeable. This differs from an acne scar, which changes skin texture through a depression, thickening or raised tissue.

Choose a non-comedogenic sunscreen and reapply it when exposure continues. Keep the routine simple if the skin is irritated: a gentle cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen are a useful base. Introduce only one pigment-targeting product at a time so you can identify irritation. More inflammation from harsh peels, frequent scrubbing or picking can deepen the mark. Managing new pimples also reduces opportunities for fresh spots to form.

Book a dermatology review if the mark is growing, has an irregular outline, contains several colours, bleeds, crusts repeatedly or was never clearly linked to a pimple. Seek timely care for a painful lump, spreading redness, warmth, drainage or fever. A clinician should also assess widespread or recurring patches, because conditions such as melasma, sun spots and fungal colour changes can require a different approach.

Ask whether the mark is pigment, redness or a textural scar, and which ingredients are suitable for your skin tone and current acne routine. Discuss pregnancy or breastfeeding, eczema, sensitive skin and medicines before starting active products. If considering a chemical peel, brightening procedure or laser, ask about preparation, expected irritation, recovery care and the possibility of temporary or lasting pigment alteration.
