What to expect after embryo transfer

Bed rest does not keep an embryo in place. The embryo is deposited inside the uterus, and ordinary movements such as standing, walking, using the toilet, or coughing do not make it fall out. Follow any additional restriction given for your own clinical circumstances.

Light spotting, mild cramping, breast tenderness, bloating, or no symptoms at all may occur during the waiting period. The transfer procedure and hormone medicines can produce sensations similar to early pregnancy or an approaching period.

Symptoms cannot establish whether implantation has occurred. Testing too early may give a misleading result because treatment medicines or the timing of pregnancy-hormone production can affect what the test detects.

Take progesterone and other prescribed support on schedule. Do not stop after spotting or a home test unless the clinic directs you. Eat normally, drink according to thirst, and choose comfortable low-impact movement while avoiding activities your team has restricted.

Keep the official test appointment and note the clinic's instructions for reporting the result. If you forget a medicine dose, seek advice on that specific medicine and timing; taking extra without guidance can disrupt the regimen.

Contact your clinic for heavy bleeding, fever, worsening abdominal pain or swelling, persistent vomiting, faintness, or sharply reduced urination. Get emergency help for shortness of breath, chest or upper-back pain, coughing blood, severe one-sided lower abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, collapse, or substantial swelling.

Report concerning symptoms even before the pregnancy-test date. They can require assessment for complications related to ovarian stimulation or an early pregnancy rather than observation at home.

Confirm the test date, how long each medicine continues, which pain relief is acceptable, and whether there are personalised limits on exercise, sex, bathing, travel, or work. Ask for both daytime and out-of-hours contact routes.
