When embryo transfer happens after egg collection

Your exact date depends on fertilisation, embryo development, the clinic's plan and whether your body is ready for transfer. The embryology team usually updates you after collection and confirms whether an embryo is suitable to transfer or freeze.

For a fresh transfer, embryos develop in the laboratory after fertilisation while the uterine lining is supported for implantation. The planned day can change as the team observes development. Not every collected egg is mature or fertilises, and not every fertilised egg continues developing, so the final transfer plan may not be known on collection day.

A fresh transfer may be deferred if there is concern about ovarian hyperstimulation, hormone levels, the uterine lining or another clinical issue. Suitable embryos can be frozen, allowing transfer after the ovaries have recovered and the lining is prepared in a later natural or medicated cycle.

Use progesterone and any other medicine exactly as the fertility team directs; the start time and route are part of the transfer plan. Check when the clinic will call, whether you should arrive with a comfortably full bladder, and which medicines to take on the procedure day. Do not change treatment after spotting or mild cramps without contacting the clinic.

Mild pelvic discomfort, bloating and light spotting can follow egg collection. Rest as needed, drink according to your clinic's advice and follow its activity instructions while the ovaries remain enlarged. Keep the clinic's out-of-hours number available because symptoms can change after you leave.

Seek prompt advice for increasing abdominal swelling or pain, repeated vomiting, difficulty drinking, reduced urination, breathlessness, chest pain, faintness, fever or heavy bleeding. These symptoms need assessment after egg collection and should not wait for the scheduled transfer call.

Contact the fertility team if you miss a medication dose, are unsure when progesterone should start, or have not received the promised laboratory update. A postponed transfer can be disappointing, but it may allow recovery or better preparation before a frozen transfer.

Ask whether the plan is for a fresh or frozen transfer, when you will hear about embryo development, what could change the date, and which medicine schedule applies. Also confirm the transfer-day arrival instructions, the date for the pregnancy test and who to call if symptoms develop overnight.
