Adult ringworm: signs, treatment, and precautions

Despite its name, no worm is involved. The rash may form a ring with a clearer centre, but its shape varies with skin tone, body site, scratching, and previous creams, so appearance alone may not settle the diagnosis.

On the body, ringworm commonly has a scaly, raised, or more active outer edge that slowly extends. Redness can be subtle on darker skin, where the patch may look brown, purple, grey, or darker than nearby skin. Other conditions, including eczema and psoriasis, can resemble it.

The fungus can pass through direct skin contact, infected animals, shared towels or clothing, and contaminated surfaces. Warm, moist areas encourage growth. Ringworm affecting the scalp, beard, nails, feet, or groin may look different and can require a treatment approach tailored to that site.

A pharmacist can help select a topical antifungal for a limited skin patch. Apply it to clean, dry skin for the full course on the label, extending over the visible edge as directed. Continue for the instructed period even when the rash begins to fade. Avoid using a steroid cream by itself, because it can mask the border and allow the fungus to spread.

Keep the area dry, change damp clothing, wash hands after touching the rash, and do not share towels, razors, sports equipment, or bedding. Launder items that contact affected skin and check pets with suspicious bald or scaly patches through a veterinarian. Covering a patch loosely may reduce direct contact, but airtight dressings trap moisture.

Arrange an assessment if the rash covers a wide area, involves the scalp, beard, or nails, keeps spreading during correctly used treatment, or returns repeatedly. A clinician may take a skin, hair, or nail sample when the diagnosis is unclear and may consider an oral antifungal when topical medicine cannot reach the infection effectively.

Get prompt care for marked pain, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, or rapidly worsening redness, as these features can accompany bacterial infection. Earlier medical input is appropriate for someone with a weakened immune system, poorly controlled diabetes, or a severe reaction to a treatment.

Ask which diagnosis fits the rash, whether testing is useful, and whether the body site changes the treatment. Bring the names of creams already used and explain any contact with affected people, animals, gyms, or shared equipment. If oral medicine is proposed, ask about interactions with your current medicines and the monitoring it may require.
