ADHD testing for adults

The goal is to understand a continuing pattern, including signs from childhood, rather than to judge performance on a single concentration task. Adults can be assessed even when no childhood diagnosis was made.

The clinician may explore missed deadlines, unfinished tasks, careless errors, time blindness, impulsive decisions, restlessness, relationship friction, driving issues, and the effort required to stay organised. Symptoms must cause functional difficulty and not occur only during a short stressful period.

Sleep disorders, anxiety, depression, trauma, substance use, learning differences, physical illness, and medicine effects can overlap with ADHD. More than one condition can coexist, so identifying another problem does not automatically end the evaluation.

Before the visit, list examples from employment, education, home, relationships, and daily administration. Gather old reports or evaluations when accessible, and ask a relative or long-term contact whether they can describe earlier patterns if you are comfortable involving them.

Bring details of prescribed medicines, supplements, caffeine, alcohol, sleep, and previous mental health care. If medication may be discussed, the clinician may review cardiovascular history and other factors relevant to safe prescribing and follow-up.

Consider evaluation when recurring difficulties threaten employment, study, relationships, driving safety, finances, or essential routines. Immediate danger, suicidal intent, severe confusion, hallucinations, or a sudden striking behaviour change requires urgent local care rather than waiting for an assessment.

Useful questions include how childhood evidence will be handled if records are missing, which alternative causes need checking, whether an informant is necessary, and how recommendations will address your most disruptive daily problems.
