ADHD symptoms in adults and children

Short answer
ADHD presents as persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity or impulsivity that are out of step with development and interfere with everyday functioning.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Core areas
- Inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity.
- Diagnostic context
- A persistent pattern, impairment and experiences across different settings matter.
- Important distinction
- Several health and sleep problems can resemble ADHD symptoms.
The pattern behind ADHD symptoms
Someone may mainly have inattentive features, mainly hyperactive and impulsive features, or a mixture. Symptoms begin during childhood, although the demands of study, employment, household management or parenthood may make them more noticeable later.
How symptoms can look day to day
Inattention can involve losing belongings, missing details, drifting away during conversations, forgetting commitments or struggling to organise a sequence of tasks. Hyperactivity may appear as constant movement, inner restlessness or difficulty doing quiet activities. Impulsivity can lead to interrupting, acting before considering consequences or finding waiting unusually difficult.
Adults sometimes develop elaborate reminders or depend on urgency to finish work, which can hide the effort involved. Sleep loss, anxiety, depression, learning difficulties, substance use and some medical problems can produce overlapping experiences, so a symptom list alone cannot confirm ADHD.
What to do if you recognise symptoms
Write down specific examples, when they occur and how they affect school, work, home life or relationships. If possible, gather childhood school reports or observations from someone who knew you then. This helps a clinician understand whether the pattern has been longstanding and appears in more than one setting.
Arrange a mental health or primary care assessment rather than relying on an online checklist. While waiting, simplify schedules, use visible reminders, reduce avoidable distractions and protect regular sleep. These measures can support functioning but do not determine the diagnosis.
When symptoms need care
Seek routine professional help when the pattern causes repeated problems with learning, employment, finances, relationships, driving or self-care. An earlier appointment is sensible when symptoms worsen abruptly, because a sudden change is not the usual developmental course considered in ADHD assessment.
Obtain immediate help if there are thoughts of self-harm, dangerous impulsive behaviour, a risk of harm to others, severe agitation or confusion. Call local emergency services or go to the closest emergency department.
Questions about assessment
Ask how childhood history and different life settings will be assessed, what other causes need consideration, and whether information from a family member or teacher would help. It is also useful to ask what support is available while the assessment is underway.

Questions people ask
Can adults have ADHD without obvious physical hyperactivity?
Yes. Hyperactivity in adulthood may be experienced as inner restlessness, excessive talking or difficulty settling rather than conspicuous running or climbing.
Does occasional forgetfulness indicate ADHD?
Occasional lapses happen for many reasons. ADHD assessment looks for a longstanding pattern that causes meaningful difficulties and is not better accounted for by another explanation.
