Private ADHD diagnosis: what a thorough assessment should include

The clinician should examine current attention or impulse-control difficulties, their effect in more than one part of life, whether relevant traits were present earlier in life, and whether another condition better explains the difficulties. The written outcome should explain the reasoning, recommendations, and follow-up arrangements.

Expect a detailed developmental, educational, work, relationship, medical, and mental health history. With your permission, the assessor may use school records or observations from someone who knows you well. Questionnaires can organise information, but the clinician must interpret them alongside an interview and functional history.

The assessment may also explore sleep, anxiety, depression, trauma, substance use, learning differences, autism, medicines, and physical health. These can coexist with ADHD or resemble parts of it, so recognising them shapes safer, more useful care.

Before booking, confirm the professional's qualifications, experience assessing ADHD in your age group, assessment method, report format, and arrangements for discussing the result. Ask who provides ongoing care and how information can be shared with your usual doctor when you consent.

Bring a medicine list, relevant medical information, examples of difficulties at home and work or education, and any available childhood records. Write down coping methods too; strong compensatory habits may hide the effort required to function.

Request clarification if the conclusion is unclear, the report lacks supporting reasoning, overlapping conditions were not considered, or you do not understand the follow-up plan. Seek prompt mental health care if distress is worsening or daily functioning is collapsing. Thoughts of suicide, self-harm, severe agitation, or inability to remain safe require urgent help regardless of where an ADHD assessment was obtained.

Ask who will conduct the evaluation, what information they require, how alternative explanations are assessed, and when you will receive a written report. Also clarify who reviews treatment benefits and side effects, and how urgent concerns are handled between appointments.
