ADHD and Depression

Short answer
ADHD and depression can occur together, and each may worsen concentration, motivation, sleep and everyday functioning.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer
They are different conditions, so a clinician looks at the timing and pattern of symptoms rather than assuming that every attention problem comes from ADHD or every low period comes from frustration.
Where the symptoms overlap
Depression often presents with persistent low mood or loss of interest, along with changes in energy, sleep, appetite, thinking or self-worth. ADHD more typically involves a longstanding pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that affects daily life. Difficulty concentrating, irritability and unfinished tasks can appear in both.
Timing helps separate them. ADHD traits usually trace back to earlier life, while a depressive episode represents a change from a person's usual mood and functioning. Poor sleep can amplify either condition and may need its own assessment.
Preparing for an assessment
Record when low mood, loss of interest, attention problems and sleep changes began, whether they fluctuate, and how they affect work, education, relationships and self-care. Include current medicines, supplements, substance use and any past periods of unusually elevated energy or reduced need for sleep.
Treatment may address both conditions and can include psychological therapy, practical ADHD supports and medication chosen for the individual. Take prescribed medicines as directed; discuss side effects or mood changes before altering them.
Safety and timely care
Book a clinical appointment when low mood or loss of interest persists, responsibilities are becoming unmanageable, or sleep and appetite have changed noticeably. Get urgent help for thoughts of suicide or self-harm, a plan to act on them, inability to stay safe, hallucinations, or extreme agitation. Stay with the person and contact local emergency services if danger is immediate.
Topics to discuss
You might ask which symptoms point to depression, which reflect baseline ADHD, whether insomnia or another health problem needs evaluation, and how improvement will be tracked. Also clarify who to contact if mood deteriorates after starting or changing treatment.

Questions people ask
Can depression look like worsening ADHD?
Yes. Reduced energy, slower thinking, disrupted sleep and poor motivation can make attention and organisation harder.
Should both conditions be treated at once?
The sequence depends on severity, safety, current medicines and personal needs; a clinician can build and monitor a coordinated plan.
