ADHD and autism: similarities and differences

Short answer
ADHD and autism are distinct neurodevelopmental conditions that can coexist and may share some outwardly similar traits.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Relationship
- ADHD and autism can occur in the same person.
- Assessment principle
- Clinicians examine development, context, function, and the reasons behind outward behaviour.
- Support focus
- Adjustments should match attention, communication, predictability, and sensory needs.
The short answer
Both can affect executive functioning, sensory regulation, communication, routines, and relationships, but the underlying experience differs between people. Having one diagnosis does not exclude assessment for the other when additional traits cause difficulty or require different support.
Looking beyond similar behaviour
A person with ADHD may interrupt because an idea feels urgent or working memory may lose it; an autistic person may speak at length because the topic is deeply engaging or conversational cues are hard to read. Changes in plans can be difficult because ADHD makes organisation demanding, because an autistic person needs predictability, or for both reasons. Sensory overload can also increase restlessness, withdrawal, or irritability.
Assessment explores early development, attention and activity regulation, communication style, repetitive or focused interests, sensory experiences, need for sameness, adaptive skills, and functioning across environments. Clinicians also consider anxiety, sleep, learning differences, language, mood, and physical health. No single trait or online questionnaire confirms either condition.
Matching support to the person
Start with the specific barrier rather than the label. Visual schedules and reminders can support working memory; advance notice and clear plans can reduce uncertainty; quieter spaces or sensory tools may ease overload. Give instructions in direct language, divide tasks into manageable parts, and allow recovery after demanding social or sensory situations.
ADHD medicine may help selected ADHD symptoms but does not treat core autistic traits. Psychological support should be adapted to the person’s communication, sensory profile, and processing style. Review sleep, nutrition, movement, school or workplace adjustments, and caregiver needs as part of a broader plan.
When further help matters
Request assessment when attention, impulsivity, communication differences, rigid routines, sensory distress, or daily living difficulties are creating persistent problems at home, school, work, or in relationships. Seek urgent help if the person has thoughts of self-harm, cannot remain safe, stops eating or drinking, becomes severely agitated, or has a sudden major change in behaviour or awareness. An abrupt change should prompt a search for pain, illness, medicine effects, or another acute cause.
Questions that clarify the plan
Ask which observed traits fit each condition, what developmental information is missing, and how communication or sensory needs will be accommodated during assessment. Discuss which outcomes matter most, whether support is available for family or caregivers, and how any medication will be monitored for sleep, appetite, mood, and behaviour changes.

Questions people ask
Can someone be diagnosed with both ADHD and autism?
Yes. A clinician may diagnose both when the person’s developmental history and current traits meet the relevant criteria and each diagnosis adds a useful explanation for their needs.
Are sensory difficulties caused only by autism?
No. Sensory sensitivity or sensory seeking can occur in several contexts, including ADHD, autism, anxiety, and some health conditions. The pattern, developmental history, and functional effect help guide interpretation.
Will the same strategies help both conditions?
Some supports, such as clear routines and reduced distractions, may help both. Others need tailoring: one person may need more novelty to stay engaged while also requiring advance warning before an unavoidable change.
