Understanding ADHD and getting help

Short answer
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition involving persistent difficulties with attention, impulse control or activity regulation that affect daily life.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Diagnosis
- A persistent pattern across daily settings
- Assessment
- Development, health, functioning and other possible causes
- Support
- Practical adjustments, therapy and sometimes medication
The short answer
It can occur in children and adults. Features may include losing track of tasks, disorganisation, forgetfulness, restlessness, interrupting or acting before considering consequences. A diagnosis is based on a structured assessment, not on a single symptom or online checklist.
What clinicians look for
An assessment considers whether the pattern began during childhood, appears in more than one setting and causes meaningful difficulty with education, work, relationships or self-care. A person may struggle mainly with inattention, mainly with hyperactivity and impulsivity, or with a mixture.
Sleep problems, anxiety, depression, trauma, learning differences, substance use, thyroid disorders and some medicines can resemble or intensify ADHD features. Clinicians therefore ask about physical and mental health, development, family history and day-to-day functioning rather than assuming that difficulty concentrating has one explanation.
Steps that can make daily life easier
Record specific examples of difficulties and the settings in which they occur, along with sleep, mood, caffeine, medicines and substance use. Bring school reports or observations from someone who knows you well if available. This gives the assessing clinician a clearer picture over time.
External supports can reduce mental load: use one calendar, place essential items in a consistent location, divide work into short defined tasks, reduce visual distractions and schedule movement breaks. Treatment may combine education, environmental adjustments, skills-based therapy and medication, chosen according to needs and medical history.
When to seek care
Book an assessment when attention, restlessness or impulsive behaviour is repeatedly disrupting work, education, relationships, driving, finances or personal care. Earlier review is sensible if mood has changed markedly, sleep is severely disrupted, substances are being used to cope, or prescribed treatment causes concerning effects such as chest pain, fainting or severe agitation.
Seek emergency help now if there are thoughts or plans of self-harm, an immediate risk to another person, extreme confusion, hallucinations, collapse or severe breathing difficulty. Stay with the person if it is safe and remove accessible means of harm while emergency support is arranged.
Questions to take to an appointment
Ask what information would support an assessment, which other causes need checking, and what non-medication and medication options fit your priorities. If treatment starts, clarify how benefits and side effects will be monitored, what to do after a missed dose, and which symptoms require urgent contact.

Questions people ask
What should you know about adhd 1177?
ADHD affects regulation of attention, activity or impulses. Proper assessment looks at the lifelong pattern, its impact in different settings and other conditions that might explain the difficulties.
Does difficulty concentrating confirm ADHD?
No. Poor sleep, anxiety, low mood, learning differences, medical conditions and medicines can also affect concentration, which is why a broad assessment matters.
Is medication the only ADHD treatment?
No. Education, routines, workplace or school adjustments and psychological strategies can all be useful; medication is one option considered for the individual.
