What should you know about adalimumab pen?

Its covered needle and activation mechanism can make self-injection easier, but each brand or version may operate differently. Training and the leaflet packaged with the dispensed pen are the right guides for its controls.

Confirm that the label names the medicine and strength you were prescribed, and examine the expiry information, casing and viewing window. Do not use a pen that has been dropped onto a hard surface, is cracked, has a broken seal or contains liquid with unexpected cloudiness, flakes or discolouration. A pharmacist can advise whether a questionable device should be replaced.

Allow the device to reach the preparation state described in its own instructions without using hot water, sunlight or another external heat source. Shaking can damage a biologic medicine. Keep the cap on until the injection site is ready.

Prepare a clean surface, wash your hands and gather the pen, skin wipe and sharps container. Select an approved area of the thigh or abdomen, avoiding the skin close to the navel as directed by the device leaflet. Choose intact skin without tenderness, bruising, thick scales, scars, redness or infection, then clean it and wait for it to dry.

Position and activate the pen exactly as demonstrated. Hold it in place until the device's visual or sound cue confirms completion, then lift it away without rubbing the site. Dispose of it immediately; a pen must not be shared or saved for reuse. If storage conditions were not maintained, ask a pharmacist before injecting it.

If the pen is removed too soon, medicine runs over the skin, the indicator does not finish or you are unsure whether the dose entered, do not automatically inject again. Place the device somewhere safe away from others and call the clinic, manufacturer support line shown in the packaging or a pharmacist.

Call emergency services for throat swelling, breathing trouble, severe dizziness or collapse. Seek prompt clinical advice for fever, an ongoing cough, painful urination, spreading redness at the site, pus, worsening swelling or other signs of infection. These warnings relate to immune suppression and the injection site, not simply to discomfort from the needle.

Have the nurse watch you practise with a demonstration device and explain every completion cue. Clarify where supplies can be obtained, how sharps are returned locally, which number handles an incomplete dose, and whether a caregiver may administer the medicine after training.
