Acute spasmodic laryngitis: symptoms, care and warning signs

How the structures involved in Laryngitis differ from normal

Short answer

Acute spasmodic laryngitis causes sudden voice-box irritation and tightening, so breathing difficulty requires prompt medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main area affected
The larynx, or voice box
Typical clues
Sudden hoarseness, harsh cough, throat irritation or noisy breathing
Key safety issue
Any sign of restricted airflow needs urgent assessment

The short answer

The episode may include a hoarse or absent voice, a harsh cough, throat discomfort, or noisy breathing. Viral respiratory illness, irritation, and reflux can inflame the larynx; the appropriate response depends chiefly on whether airflow is affected.

What the diagnosis means

The larynx contains the vocal cords and sits at the entrance to the windpipe. Swelling changes how the cords vibrate, producing hoarseness, while a spasm can briefly narrow the airway and create a high-pitched sound when breathing in. Symptoms may begin abruptly, including during the night.

A clinician may ask about a recent cold, repeated coughing, smoke or chemical exposure, voice strain, and acid reflux. Examination helps distinguish uncomplicated voice-box inflammation from an airway problem or another cause of noisy breathing.

Steps that may ease irritation

Rest the voice and speak normally but softly when necessary; whispering can strain the vocal cords. Sip fluids, avoid smoke and vaping, and keep away from fumes that trigger coughing. Humidified air may feel soothing, but hot steam can burn and should not be inhaled directly.

If reflux seems to trigger episodes, avoid lying down soon after eating and discuss persistent symptoms with a clinician. Do not give cough, cold, or reflux medicines to a child unless a healthcare professional confirms that the product and dose are suitable.

When breathing symptoms need urgent care

Call emergency services for struggling or very fast breathing, blue or grey lips, severe drowsiness, inability to speak or cry normally, drooling with difficulty swallowing, or a harsh breathing sound while resting. Keep the person upright and calm while help is arranged, and do not inspect the throat with an object.

Arrange a medical review if hoarseness persists, attacks recur, swallowing is painful, fever develops, or drinking becomes difficult. A clinician can assess hydration, listen to breathing, and decide whether airway treatment or investigation of a trigger is needed.

Useful questions at your appointment

Ask what is most likely irritating the larynx, whether the breathing sound suggests airway narrowing, and which changes should prompt emergency help. Mention night-time attacks, reflux symptoms, recent infections, new medicines, allergies, and exposure to smoke or strong chemicals.

Questions people ask

Is acute spasmodic laryngitis contagious?

The spasm itself is not contagious. A virus causing the underlying laryngitis may spread through respiratory droplets and contaminated hands.

Should I whisper when my voice is hoarse?

No. Whispering can place extra tension on the vocal cords; brief, gentle speech and voice rest are usually kinder to the larynx.

Can acid reflux irritate the voice box?

Yes. Reflux reaching the throat can irritate laryngeal tissue and may contribute to hoarseness or coughing, particularly after meals or when lying down.
