The longus colli muscles sit in front of the cervical spine and help control neck movement. Calcium crystals can collect in a tendon near the upper spine and trigger inflammation in the surrounding tissues. The condition commonly presents with marked stiffness, pain when turning the head, and discomfort on swallowing. Fever is not a defining feature, so fever or feeling systemically unwell deserves careful evaluation for infection.

Diagnosis usually combines an examination with imaging. A CT scan can show the characteristic calcification and nearby soft-tissue swelling, helping distinguish it from a deep neck infection, injury, or another cause of painful swallowing.

Arrange a prompt medical assessment, especially if this is the first episode or swallowing is difficult. Until assessed, avoid forceful neck manipulation and movements that sharply increase pain. Support the neck in a comfortable neutral position, keep activity gentle, and choose food or fluids that are easy to swallow if you can swallow safely.

Treatment is usually non-surgical and aims to settle inflammation and pain. A clinician can decide whether an anti-inflammatory medicine or another pain reliever is suitable after considering stomach, kidney, heart, pregnancy, allergy, and medication factors. Symptoms often improve over days, but follow-up is sensible if progress stalls or the diagnosis remains uncertain.

Go to emergency care for trouble breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, rapidly increasing throat or neck swelling, new weakness or numbness, confusion, or severe symptoms after trauma. Seek same-day assessment for fever, chills, a muffled voice, worsening swallowing difficulty, or feeling very unwell because these features can point to infection or another urgent cause.
