Is acute laryngitis contagious?

Hoarseness caused by shouting, smoke, dry air, or reflux does not spread. When the voice change accompanies a cough, runny nose, fever, or sore throat, take precautions as you would for a respiratory infection because droplets and contaminated hands can carry the underlying virus.

Laryngitis describes inflammation in the voice box rather than one particular infection. Viral infections can inflame the larynx along with the nose and throat. Voice overuse and chemical irritation produce similar hoarseness without an infectious agent. This distinction explains why two people with rough voices may pose different transmission risks. Symptoms and recent exposures offer clues, although examination may be needed when the pattern is unclear.

Cover coughs and sneezes, wash your hands after touching your face, and avoid sharing cups, cutlery, or towels. Clean frequently handled surfaces and improve airflow in shared rooms where practical. Reduce close contact with people who may become seriously unwell from respiratory infections while you have active cold-like symptoms. Resting the voice and drinking fluids may improve comfort, but these measures do not determine whether an infection can spread.

Urgent assessment is needed for struggling to breathe, noisy inhalation, blue or grey lips, drooling, inability to swallow fluids, confusion, or severe weakness. Contact a clinician if fever or throat symptoms are worsening, you cannot stay hydrated, or hoarseness fails to settle after the other respiratory symptoms improve. People with reduced immunity should seek personalised advice early in an infectious illness.

Ask whether the full symptom pattern suggests a respiratory infection or a non-infectious trigger. If you live with a vulnerable person, discuss which added precautions make sense and how long to follow them based on the suspected illness. Mention recent contact with anyone who had similar symptoms and any workplace or household outbreak.
