Actavis testosterone gel: use and safety

The brand name alone does not identify the strength or application directions. Check the label and dispensing instructions, use only the prescribed amount, and do not substitute another testosterone gel without a prescriber or pharmacist confirming how to use it.

Testosterone passes through the skin into the bloodstream. The reason for treatment, target dose and monitoring plan differ between patients. Products labelled for testosterone replacement in men should not be assumed to have dosing instructions suitable for women; testosterone therapy for a woman needs individual clinical assessment and follow-up.

Possible effects include acne, oily skin, increased body hair, scalp hair thinning, mood changes or voice change. Tell the prescriber about pregnancy, plans for pregnancy, breastfeeding, liver or heart problems, blood clots and all medicines or supplements before treatment.

Follow the application site and timing printed for your exact container. Apply it only to clean, dry, unbroken skin at the instructed site. Wash your hands with soap and water immediately afterwards, allow the gel to dry, then cover the area with clothing. Keep away from flames and smoking until dry.

Prevent children, pregnant people and others from touching unwashed or uncovered treated skin. Before expected skin contact, wash the application area with soap and water. If transfer may have occurred, the other person should wash the contacted skin promptly. Do not double an amount after a missed application; check the leaflet or ask a pharmacist what to do.

Get urgent medical help for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or tongue, chest pain, sudden weakness on one side, or a painful swollen leg. Contact the prescriber promptly if a child or another adult develops unexpected acne, body-hair growth, genital changes or other signs of accidental testosterone exposure.

A pregnant person who touches fresh gel or an unwashed application site should wash the skin with soap and water and obtain medical advice promptly. Report persistent skin irritation, marked mood changes, new voice deepening or other unwanted effects rather than changing the dose yourself.
