Acrania and anencephaly in pregnancy

In acrania, the fetal skull bones do not form normally around the developing brain. Exposure of brain tissue can lead to anencephaly, in which major parts of the brain and skull are absent. These conditions arise very early as the neural tube develops. They are not caused by something a pregnant person did during ordinary daily activity.

Ultrasound can show characteristic abnormalities, but a fetal medicine specialist should confirm the finding and explain the outlook. Anencephaly is not compatible with long-term survival, although pregnancy may continue and a baby can sometimes be born alive for a brief time. Clear, sensitive counselling allows parents to consider the options permitted in their clinical and legal setting.

Request specialist ultrasound confirmation and time to discuss what the images show. The team can explain continuing the pregnancy, ending the pregnancy where legally and clinically available, birth planning, and comfort-focused newborn care. Ask for an interpreter if needed and invite a trusted person to appointments. Genetic counselling may review whether testing could clarify the diagnosis and discuss folic acid planning before a future pregnancy.

The diagnosis itself does not usually cause a new maternal emergency, but pregnancy warning signs still require care. Contact maternity triage urgently for heavy bleeding, leaking fluid, strong regular contractions, fever, severe abdominal pain, or reduced fetal movement. Seek immediate mental health support if grief feels unmanageable, you cannot stay safe, or you have thoughts of harming yourself; emergency services can help during an immediate crisis.

Ask whether the finding is acrania, anencephaly, or another condition; how it was confirmed; and whether additional imaging or testing would change decisions. Discuss every available pregnancy option, what labour and birth could involve, memory-making or spiritual support, lactation choices after loss, and follow-up for physical recovery and future pregnancy planning.
