Can acid reflux cause palpitations?

Short answer
Acid reflux does not usually directly alter the heart rhythm, but discomfort, stress and shared triggers can make palpitations noticeable around reflux episodes.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Sensation
- Racing, fluttering, pounding or skipped beats
- Shared triggers
- Large meals, caffeine, alcohol, nicotine and poor sleep
- Emergency combination
- Palpitations with fainting, severe breathlessness or chest pressure
The short answer
A racing, pounding, fluttering or skipped-beat sensation deserves its own assessment when new, recurrent or prolonged. Do not assume a heartbeat symptom is digestive simply because it follows a meal or occurs with chest burning.
Why reflux and palpitations may coincide
A large meal can produce stomach fullness and reflux while also making the normal heartbeat easier to feel. Pain or alarm can release stress hormones that speed the pulse. Caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, dehydration and poor sleep can aggravate either sensation, creating an apparent link without proving that reflux changed the rhythm.
Palpitations have many possible causes, including an abnormal rhythm, thyroid overactivity, low blood sugar and anaemia. Atrial fibrillation can present with an irregular or fast heartbeat, but palpitations alone do not show which cause is present.
What to do during and after an episode
Stop strenuous activity, sit down and notice whether the heartbeat feels fast, irregular or forceful. Record when it began, what you were doing, associated symptoms and any recent meal, caffeine, nicotine, medicine or supplement. If you can do so calmly, note your pulse without delaying help for warning signs.
For accompanying reflux, choose smaller meals and remain upright afterwards. Keep hydrated unless a clinician has restricted your fluids. Arrange a medication review rather than stopping a prescribed drug yourself; inhalers, decongestants and some supplements can influence heartbeat awareness.
When palpitations need care
Call emergency services for palpitations with chest pressure or pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, near-fainting, confusion, new weakness or a heartbeat that remains very fast while you feel unwell. Do not drive yourself when faint or severely unwell.
Arrange a prompt appointment for a first unexplained episode, repeated episodes, an irregular pulse, worsening frequency, or symptoms during exercise. A clinician may examine you, review medicines and decide whether an electrical heart tracing or blood tests are appropriate.
Useful questions for your clinician
Ask whether the episode description suggests a rhythm disturbance, which triggers to avoid before assessment and whether monitoring is needed to capture an intermittent event. Clarify which symptoms should send you directly to emergency care and how to manage reflux without masking a separate chest complaint.

Questions people ask
Can trapped gas feel like heart palpitations?
Gas and fullness can create movement or pressure in the upper abdomen, but a fluttering or irregular heartbeat should be assessed as a heartbeat symptom rather than labelled as gas.
Why do I notice palpitations after eating?
Meal size, caffeine, alcohol, blood sugar changes, stress and normal shifts in circulation may contribute. Repeated episodes need clinical review.
Can an antacid stop palpitations?
An antacid may ease reflux discomfort but is not a treatment for an abnormal heart rhythm. Persistent or concerning palpitations require separate assessment.
