Acid for melasma: benefits and cautions

How the structures involved in Melasma differ from normal

Short answer

Selected acids may gradually lighten melasma by increasing surface cell turnover, but irritation and sun exposure can deepen uneven pigmentation.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Do acids improve melasma?

Glycolic acid, lactic acid, and azelaic acid may feature in a treatment plan. Their roles differ: exfoliating acids loosen pigmented surface cells, while azelaic acid can influence pigment production and may also calm inflammation.

Why melasma needs a measured plan

Melasma causes flat brown or grey-brown patches, commonly across the cheeks, forehead, upper lip, or jawline. Sunlight, visible light, heat, hormonal influences, and skin irritation may all contribute to recurrence or darkening.

An acid addresses only part of that process. A strong peel or frequent home exfoliation can inflame the skin and trigger further pigment, particularly in skin that marks easily. Improvement is usually gradual and maintenance remains important.

Build a safer routine

Start with a mild formulation and introduce it separately from retinoids, scrubs, or other exfoliants. Apply a moisturiser if the skin feels tight, and stop when burning, rawness, or persistent redness develops. Daily broad-spectrum sun protection, shade, and a hat help limit the light signals that sustain melasma.

A dermatologist can confirm that the patches are melasma before recommending home acids, prescription pigment treatments, or a carefully selected chemical peel. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, eczema, recent procedures, and a history of post-inflammatory darkening affect the choice.

Changes that deserve examination

Book an examination when pigment is new, changing quickly, confined to one unusual spot, raised, scaly, bleeding, painful, or accompanied by a changing mole. Melasma itself is usually flat and symmetrical, so a different pattern may need another diagnosis.

Get urgent help if an acid causes marked facial swelling, blistering over a broad area, eye exposure with ongoing pain, or trouble breathing. Rinse the exposed skin or eye with plenty of water and stop using the product.

What to discuss before treatment

Discuss whether your pigment pattern fits melasma, which active ingredients can be combined, and what irritation signs should trigger a pause. Ask how your skin tone and history of dark marks influence the suitability of peels, microneedling, brightening treatments, or laser toning.

Questions people ask

Is a stronger acid better for melasma?

Not necessarily. Greater irritation can worsen discoloration, so strength and frequency should suit your skin tolerance and treatment plan.

Can melasma return after acid treatment?

Yes. Melasma can recur because light, heat, hormones, and irritation may continue to stimulate pigment even after patches fade.

Can I combine several brightening acids?

Combining actives without guidance raises the chance of barrier damage. Introduce products separately and have persistent pigmentation assessed.
