What should you know about Accare pulse oximeters?

The fingertip sensor shines light through tissue to estimate how much haemoglobin is carrying oxygen. It is useful for monitoring a trend when a clinician recommends it, but it does not diagnose the cause of breathlessness or rule out serious illness.

Cold hands, weak circulation, movement, nail products, poor sensor position, bright light, and device condition can interfere with the signal. Skin pigmentation may also affect accuracy in some circumstances. A stable trend taken under similar conditions is generally more informative than one isolated display.

Your personal action level may differ if you have a lung or heart condition, live at altitude, or were given a specific monitoring plan. Follow the threshold and response instructions supplied by your treating clinician rather than copying another person's target.

Rest quietly, warm a cold hand, remove nail products if they prevent a reliable signal, and place the sensor securely on the finger specified by the instructions. Keep the hand still and wait for the display to settle. Record the oxygen estimate, pulse, time, symptoms, and any oxygen treatment in use.

If a result is unexpected, check the fit and repeat it after resting. Inspect batteries and the sensor according to the manufacturer instructions. Do not change prescribed oxygen or delay medical care solely because the display looks reassuring.

Follow the urgent-action plan given by your clinician if readings fall outside your agreed range or keep declining. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, new confusion, collapse, marked drowsiness, or chest pain, even if the oximeter appears normal. Contact a GP when repeated unexpected readings occur without severe symptoms or when you are unsure that the device is working correctly.
