What should you know about ablative resurfacing laser?

Short answer

Ablative resurfacing laser deliberately removes the skin surface and heats underlying tissue to renew texture and support collagen remodelling.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Core action
Removes surface tissue through controlled laser energy
Treatment formats
Continuous-field or fractional delivery
Important trade-off
Treatment intensity influences both tissue response and recovery

Direct answer

It may improve selected wrinkles, scars, roughness, and sun damage, but it creates an open healing surface. The balance between visible change and recovery burden depends on the laser, settings, treated area, and individual skin response.

What happens to the skin

The laser converts light into controlled thermal injury. Surface cells are removed, while heat below the surface can contract existing collagen and trigger longer-term remodelling. Treatment may cover a continuous area or be delivered fractionally as spaced microscopic zones.

Deeper or denser treatment can produce a stronger tissue response alongside more swelling, oozing, crusting, and prolonged redness. Possible complications include infection, cold-sore reactivation, acne-like eruptions, scarring, and skin becoming darker or lighter than its surrounding colour.

How to approach the procedure

Choose a clinician who can diagnose the concern before treating it and who regularly uses the proposed device on your skin type. Share any history of poor wound healing, keloids, cold sores, immune problems, recent tanning, and prescription or non-prescription products.

Obtain written instructions for cleansing, ointment or dressings, pain relief, sun protection, and return to skincare. Keep follow-up appointments so healing can be checked. Do not pick, scrub, shave over, or apply strong acids and retinoids to the recovering surface until the clinician permits them.

When recovery is not following the plan

Report fever, increasing warmth, spreading redness, foul odour, pus, escalating pain, or crops of blisters without waiting for a routine review. A wound that is not closing as expected also deserves direct examination.

Emergency assessment is appropriate for severe facial swelling with breathing trouble, fainting, sudden visual disturbance, or intense eye pain after treatment near the eyes.

Clarify the treatment plan

Discuss whether the procedure will be fractional or continuous, what depth is intended, how your pigment response affects the plan, and which outcome is achievable. Confirm the type of anaesthesia, eye protection, expected wound appearance, emergency contact route, and alternatives that do not remove the skin surface.

Questions people ask

Is ablative resurfacing the same as a non-ablative laser?

No. Ablative treatment removes surface tissue, while non-ablative treatment heats deeper skin without deliberately removing the surface.

Does redness mean the treatment has gone wrong?

Redness is expected during healing, but redness that spreads, becomes hotter, grows more painful, or occurs with discharge or fever should be assessed.

Can ablative resurfacing prevent future sun damage?

It cannot prevent new ultraviolet injury. Protective clothing, shade, and suitable sunscreen remain necessary after the skin has healed.
