Abdominal swelling on the left side

Location narrows the anatomy but does not reveal the diagnosis. Trapped gas or constipation may create a shifting bulge, while a hernia can become more obvious with coughing or straining. An enlarged organ, local mass, or fluid collection may produce a more fixed change.

Upper-left fullness can relate to the stomach, bowel, spleen, or tissues of the abdominal wall. Lower-left swelling may be associated with the bowel, abdominal wall, urinary tract, or pelvic organs. Myelofibrosis can present with abdominal fullness when the spleen becomes enlarged, although many other conditions can affect this area.

Whether the area is soft or firm, moves, changes after a bowel movement, becomes prominent when standing, or is accompanied by fever, appetite change, urinary symptoms, or bleeding gives a clinician more useful information than side alone.

Notice the exact location and whether the swelling appears only after food, during constipation, with movement, or while coughing. Note any tenderness, skin change, recent injury, bowel or urinary change, early fullness during meals, or unexplained weight change.

Arrange an examination if a one-sided bulge persists, grows, feels firm, returns repeatedly, or has no clear digestive pattern. Avoid repeatedly pressing a tender area or trying to force a bulge back into place.

Obtain urgent care for sudden severe pain, swelling after an injury, faintness, shoulder-tip pain, repeated vomiting, fever with worsening tenderness, or a rigid abdomen. A painful bulge that becomes firm, discoloured, or cannot be reduced also needs immediate assessment.

Blood in vomit, black or bloody stools, inability to pass stool or gas, breathing difficulty, or collapse are emergency warning signs rather than symptoms to monitor at home.

Ask which organ or tissue lies beneath the swollen area, whether the examination suggests a hernia or enlarged organ, what tests could clarify a persistent lump, and which changes would require reassessment.
