What a 9 mm lung nodule means

Many nodules reflect healed infection, inflammation or scar tissue, while some are cancerous. The next step depends on the nodule's shape, density, location and change over time, together with age, smoking history, previous cancer and relevant exposures.

A radiologist looks beyond the measurement. Smooth or irregular edges, solid or ground-glass appearance, calcium patterns, and the presence of other nodules all help guide assessment. Comparing earlier chest images is particularly useful because stability and growth provide information that a single scan cannot.

A lung nodule may cause no symptoms and may be found incidentally. Lung cancer can present as a nodule, but the image does not confirm cancer; diagnosis may require interval imaging, metabolic imaging or a tissue sample.

Arrange review with the clinician who ordered the scan and bring any older chest imaging from other facilities. Ask for the written radiology report and a clear date for the next action. Depending on the complete risk picture, the plan may involve a follow-up CT scan, specialist respiratory review, additional imaging or biopsy.

Ask whether the nodule is solid or ground glass, whether older images show it, which imaging features matter, what follow-up interval is planned, who is responsible for arranging it, and under what circumstances a biopsy would add useful information.
