Pregnancy dates can differ from estimates, and expected structures may not yet be visible. Unless urgent treatment is needed, clinicians often arrange further assessment before confirming that the pregnancy has stopped developing.

A missed miscarriage means that a pregnancy has stopped developing but pregnancy tissue remains in the uterus. It may present with little or no bleeding or pain, and pregnancy symptoms can continue for a while. A change in nausea or breast tenderness cannot establish the diagnosis.

Assessment may involve a transvaginal ultrasound and pregnancy-hormone blood tests. If findings do not yet clearly show whether the pregnancy is developing, the clinical team may repeat testing after enough time has passed to look for meaningful change.

If miscarriage is confirmed and you are clinically stable, options may include waiting for tissue to pass naturally, using prescribed medicine, or having a procedure to empty the uterus. The suitable choice depends on your symptoms, scan findings, medical history and preferences. Your clinician should explain what bleeding and cramping to expect and how follow-up will confirm completion.

Use pads while bleeding, keep your care team's contact details available, and take only pain relief they consider suitable. Emotional reactions vary; practical support, bereavement support or counselling can be requested at any point.

Attend emergency care for severe abdominal pain, pain focused on one side, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, breathing difficulty, confusion, or heavy bleeding that rapidly soaks pads. These warning signs require prompt evaluation regardless of whether miscarriage has been confirmed.

Contact your clinical team promptly for fever, chills, worsening pelvic tenderness, offensive-smelling discharge, uncontrolled pain, or feeling increasingly unwell. Arrange transport rather than driving if you are dizzy or weak.

Ask what the scan showed, whether the pregnancy location is confirmed, and what finding would make the diagnosis certain. If treatment is discussed, ask about expected bleeding, pain control, follow-up, signs of infection, when to take a pregnancy test, and whom to call overnight.
