Your 35-week growth scan explained

It gives your maternity team a current view of the baby and the pregnancy, particularly when there is a reason to monitor growth. It does not predict an exact birth weight or determine the birth plan on its own.

The sonographer records measurements from the baby's head, abdomen and thigh bone, which produce an estimated weight. Comparing these measurements with previous results helps the clinician understand the growth trajectory. Small differences may reflect fetal position, image quality or normal measurement variation.

The report also commonly notes whether the baby is head-down, breech or lying across the uterus, along with amniotic fluid and placental findings. Blood flow in the umbilical cord may be assessed when clinically relevant. These details are interpreted with your symptoms, medical history and other antenatal checks.

Ask when the written result will be reviewed and whether you need to see a maternity clinician the same day. If the scan is reassuring, your existing care may continue. If a measurement or blood-flow finding needs attention, the team may arrange closer monitoring, another scan or a conversation about birth timing.

Keep monitoring your baby's usual movements rather than relying on the scan for ongoing reassurance. Attend scheduled blood-pressure and antenatal checks, and carry your maternity contact details. Follow any individual instructions about follow-up because they reflect the reason the ultrasound was requested.

Promptly report reduced or changed fetal movements, vaginal bleeding, a gush or persistent trickle of fluid, or regular painful contractions. Severe abdominal pain, a severe headache with visual symptoms, sudden swelling or feeling seriously unwell also needs urgent assessment. Contact the maternity unit when symptoms start rather than waiting for scan results or the next visit.

Ask whether the baby has continued along the expected growth path and whether fluid, placenta and blood flow need further review. Discuss whether the current position requires another check, what could change the timing of delivery and how you will be told about any updated care plan.
