Ringworm is a fungal infection of the skin. With an effective medicine, itching or irritation may ease before the border, colour and scaling disappear. The visible patch can therefore remain even when treatment has started working. The required course depends on the body site, extent of infection, product and diagnosis.

A ring-shaped rash is not unique to ringworm. Eczema, contact reactions and other skin disorders can resemble it, while steroid creams can alter its appearance and allow fungal infection to spread. A rash that expands despite correctly applied antifungal treatment needs reassessment rather than repeated short courses.

Use the antifungal exactly as directed on its label or by the prescriber, including where to apply it and when to finish. Wash and dry your hands before and after touching the rash, keep the area clean and dry, and use separate towels. Ringworm involving the scalp, beard or nails often requires clinical assessment because topical skin treatment may not reach the infected tissue adequately.

Arrange medical review if the diagnosis is uncertain, the rash keeps spreading, several areas are involved, or there is no clear improvement after the expected treatment interval on the product instructions. Seek earlier advice for scalp, beard or nail involvement, pregnancy, a weakened immune system, or infection in a young baby. Pain, pus, rapidly increasing redness, fever, facial swelling or breathing trouble require prompt care.

Ask whether the pattern is definitely fungal, which body sites are affected, how long to continue the chosen antifungal and whether a sample is needed. Mention previous creams, affected contacts, pets, recent close-contact sport and any condition or medicine that changes immunity.
