Short answer

Heartburn at 22 weeks is a common pregnancy symptom that can often be eased with meal, posture, and medicine adjustments.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical feeling
Burning behind the breastbone, sometimes with a sour taste or regurgitation.
Common pattern
Symptoms can follow meals or become worse when bending or lying down.
Medicine check
Confirm pregnancy suitability and possible interactions with a pharmacist, midwife, or doctor.

The short answer

It often feels like burning behind the breastbone, sometimes with a sour taste, burping, bloating, or fluid rising toward the throat. Mild symptoms after eating or when lying down can fit pregnancy-related acid reflux, but new or severe chest pain should not be assumed to be heartburn.

Why it happens around 22 weeks

Pregnancy hormones can relax the muscular valve between the stomach and oesophagus. This makes it easier for acidic stomach contents to travel upward and irritate the oesophagus. As the uterus grows, changing pressure in the abdomen can add to the problem.

Symptoms may be more noticeable after a large meal, after a personal trigger food, when bending forward, or when lying down soon after eating. Heartburn describes the burning symptom; acid reflux describes the upward movement that causes it.

Ways to reduce the burning

Try smaller meals, eat slowly, and remain upright after food. Leave a comfortable gap between your evening meal and bedtime. If symptoms wake you, raise your head and shoulders rather than lying completely flat; sleeping on your left side may also reduce reflux.

Notice whether particular foods or drinks repeatedly trigger symptoms and reduce those specific items without making your diet unnecessarily restrictive. Rich, fatty, spicy, or acidic foods and caffeinated drinks are common triggers, but individual patterns differ.

A pharmacist, midwife, or doctor can help choose an antacid, alginate, or acid-reducing medicine suitable for pregnancy. Tell them about every medicine and supplement you take because some antacids are unsuitable in pregnancy or can interfere with iron and folic acid absorption. Do not stop prescribed medicine on your own.

When heartburn needs medical attention

Arrange medical advice if symptoms are frequent, worsening, disrupting sleep or meals, or not improving with suitable self-care. Also seek assessment for trouble or pain when swallowing, repeated vomiting, vomit that contains blood, black stools, unexplained weight loss, persistent cough, or upper abdominal pain.

Get urgent help for severe, crushing, or unfamiliar chest pain, especially with breathlessness, faintness, sweating, pain spreading to the arm, back, jaw, or shoulder, or coughing blood. Contact your maternity service urgently for severe or persistent abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular tightenings, a severe headache, vision changes, or sudden swelling. These symptoms require assessment rather than treatment as ordinary heartburn.

Useful questions for your maternity clinician

Bring the names of your medicines and supplements, and describe when the burning starts, what brings it on, and whether acid reaches your throat. Useful questions include: Which over-the-counter options fit my pregnancy and medical history? How should I separate treatment from iron or folic acid? Could another medicine be aggravating the reflux? What is the next treatment option if lifestyle changes do not control it?

Questions people ask

What should you know about 22 weeks heartburn?

Hormonal relaxation of the stomach valve and changing abdominal pressure can allow acid to rise into the oesophagus. Smaller meals, staying upright after eating, and a pregnancy-suitable treatment may help.

Can I take an antacid while pregnant?

Some antacids and alginates can be used during pregnancy, but the right product depends on its ingredients, your health, and your other medicines. Tell a pharmacist or maternity clinician that you are pregnant and list your supplements before taking one.

Does heartburn harm the baby?

Ordinary acid reflux irritates your oesophagus rather than reaching the baby. However, severe pain, persistent vomiting, difficulty eating or drinking, or pregnancy warning signs should be assessed promptly.
