13 days after embryo transfer: testing, symptoms and next steps

A blood test for the pregnancy hormone hCG may be planned around this stage, but the exact date depends on the embryo's age at transfer and your clinic's protocol. Symptoms alone cannot confirm whether implantation occurred.

Cramping, breast tenderness, bloating, tiredness or light spotting can occur after a transfer. These sensations may relate to hormonal medication, the transfer cycle or an early pregnancy, while some people feel no change at all.

A home urine result can be misleading if it is taken before the clinic's chosen date. Testing too early may miss a developing pregnancy, and hCG used in a trigger injection can sometimes remain detectable for a while. The clinic's result and interpretation should guide the next step.

Take progesterone and any other prescribed medicine at the usual times. Do not stop after spotting, a negative home test or a missed dose without receiving instructions from the fertility team. If a dose was late or missed, contact the clinic for advice specific to the product and route you use.

Normal gentle activity is generally reasonable unless your team gave restrictions. Keep hydrated, eat as usual and avoid starting new medicines or supplements without checking whether they are suitable during a possible pregnancy.

Contact the clinic promptly for bleeding that is increasing, pain that is worsening, persistent vomiting, marked abdominal swelling, reduced urination or difficulty breathing. These symptoms need assessment rather than interpretation from a home pregnancy test.

Seek urgent medical care for severe or one-sided pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, pronounced dizziness, chest pain, breathing difficulty or heavy bleeding. If you feel acutely unwell, use local emergency services and tell the team that you recently had fertility treatment.

Confirm when and where to test, whether food or medication timing matters, and how results will be shared. Ask what to do with progesterone after the result, when a repeat hCG test might be needed and whom to contact outside clinic hours if symptoms change.
