WHO reports 11 MV Hondius hantavirus cases, UAE hospitals test travel-screening routes

World Health Organization (WHO) reported 11 MV Hondius hantavirus cases, including 3 deaths, as of 13 May 2026, giving UAE hospital leaders a concrete test of travel-history capture, laboratory routing and regulator escalation.

What WHO reported

WHO said in its Disease Outbreak News update on 13 May 2026 that the MV Hondius cluster had reached 11 cases: 8 laboratory-confirmed Andes virus infections, 2 probable cases and 1 inconclusive case under further testing. WHO said all reported cases were passengers on the ship.

WHO said it was notified on 2 May 2026 by the United Kingdom International Health Regulations National Focal Point about severe acute respiratory illness aboard the Dutch-flagged MV Hondius. WHO later assessed the risk to people onboard as moderate and the global public health risk as low.
