Spotting after sex: is it a pregnancy sign?

A small amount of pink or brown blood can follow friction, dryness or contact with a sensitive cervix. Pregnancy can also cause bleeding for several reasons, but bleeding after intercourse cannot confirm pregnancy. Take a pregnancy test after a missed period or ask a clinician when testing is appropriate.

Repeated bleeding after sex should be assessed. Possible causes include cervical inflammation, sexually transmitted infection such as Chlamydia, cervical dysplasia, polyps or fibroids. A breast, pelvic or cervical symptom does not by itself identify a serious condition, and Cervical Cancer is only one possible explanation among several.

Note when the spotting occurred, its colour and amount, whether sex felt painful, and where you were in your cycle. Avoid inserting anything into the vagina until bleeding settles if irritation seems possible. Arrange a medical review if it returns, happens after intercourse repeatedly, or comes with discharge, pelvic pain or bleeding between periods.

Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided pelvic pain, faintness, dizziness, fever, or bleeding during a possible pregnancy. These symptoms need prompt assessment because they can signal a condition requiring immediate treatment.

Ask whether you need a pregnancy test, STI testing, a cervical examination or screening review. Share your last period, contraception, medicines, pain, discharge and any previous abnormal cervical results.
