Spotting after sex: am I pregnant?

Spotting after sex cannot confirm pregnancy; a correctly timed pregnancy test is the way to check, while warning symptoms need prompt care. Blood after intercourse may come from friction, dryness, hormonal changes, or an irritated cervix. Pregnancy can also alter cervical tissue, but spotting by itself cannot establish whether conception occurred.

Consider where you are in your cycle, whether contraception was used, and whether the bleeding followed recent sex or began independently. Bleeding between periods can be linked with chlamydia, cervical dysplasia, polyps, fibroids, or other cervical or uterine conditions; a symptom does not identify any one diagnosis. Record the date, amount, colour, pain, discharge, and the first day of your last period.

If a test is negative but your period does not arrive, repeat it according to the test instructions or speak with a clinician.

Use a home pregnancy test from the time your period is due, or ask a clinician when testing is appropriate if your cycles are irregular. If sex was recent and pregnancy is not wanted, seek timely advice about emergency contraception. Avoid sex if it repeatedly triggers bleeding or pain, and arrange a routine review for recurrent spotting.

Seek urgent care if you might be pregnant and have one-sided pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, faintness, severe pain, or heavy bleeding. These symptoms can indicate an ectopic pregnancy or significant bleeding and should not be judged by the amount of spotting alone. Fever or feeling acutely unwell also needs prompt review.

Ask which test and timing suit your cycle, whether you need infection or cervical checks, and what to do if the test is negative but spotting continues.
