What should you know about early pregnancy spotting after intercourse?

Pregnancy increases blood flow to the cervix, so contact during intercourse can cause a small amount of pink, red, or brown spotting. Irritation, vaginal dryness, cervical inflammation, or an infection can also contribute. Bleeding in pregnancy can have other causes, including miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy, and the amount of blood does not identify the cause by itself. A clinician may ask about pain and timing, perform an examination, test for infection, and arrange pregnancy blood tests or an ultrasound.

Pause intercourse until the bleeding has stopped and you have received advice, particularly if bleeding recurs. Use a pad rather than a tampon, note the colour and amount, and record any cramps, dizziness, discharge, or shoulder pain. Contact your maternity team or an early pregnancy service for individual guidance. Do not self-start medicines without checking that they are suitable in pregnancy.

Seek emergency care for heavy or increasing bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, severe dizziness, fever, or marked weakness. These symptoms can indicate ectopic pregnancy, significant blood loss, or infection and require immediate assessment.

Ask whether you need an examination, infection testing, repeat pregnancy hormone testing, or an ultrasound. Clarify when intercourse can be resumed and which changes should prompt emergency care.
