Lump back of neck muscle: what to know

A lump felt over a neck muscle may be in the skin, under the skin, within soft tissue, or part of a lymph-node chain. Recent scalp irritation, an ear or throat infection, or inflamed skin can produce a tender swelling. Muscle tension can cause soreness, but it does not explain every distinct bump. Cysts and other benign soft-tissue lumps are also possible.

A neck lump can be a presentation of lymphoma or head and neck cancer, yet location alone cannot distinguish these from non-cancerous causes. A clinician will consider texture, movement, tenderness, growth, associated symptoms, and the rest of the head and neck examination.

Leave the area alone apart from a gentle check. Do not massage a firm or painful lump, puncture it, or apply unprescribed medication. Write down its location, when it appeared, and any recent illness, dental problem, skin change, or injury. Book an assessment if it remains, becomes larger, feels firm or fixed, or cannot be explained by a short-lived infection. A clinician may recommend observation, imaging, or sampling depending on the examination.

Arrange prompt care for ongoing fever, drenching night sweats, unexplained weight loss, a rapidly enlarging lump, or a mass that is hard and does not move. Seek urgent help if swelling interferes with breathing or swallowing, or if severe pain and spreading redness develop. These signs guide urgency; they do not by themselves identify the cause as cancer.

You could ask whether the lump seems to be in muscle, skin, soft tissue, or a lymph node; whether an ultrasound is suitable; what changes require faster review; and whether any current infection could account for the swelling.
