Little Lump Back of Neck: What to Know

Lymph nodes can become noticeable while the body responds to a scalp, ear, throat, or skin infection. A blocked skin gland or cyst can also form a rounded lump. A clinician assesses its position, size, firmness, movement, tenderness, and the condition of the skin above it.

A neck lump is not automatically cancer. Persistent or changing lumps may need imaging or a needle sample to clarify the cause. Possible cancer-related conditions include lymphoma or head and neck cancer; a lump may also be investigated when its original source is not immediately clear, as in cancer of unknown primary.

Note when you first noticed the lump and whether it changes. Do not squeeze, puncture, or repeatedly press it, because this can irritate the area. Arrange a medical assessment if it remains, grows, feels fixed or hard, or appears without an obvious recent infection. Bring details about fever, night sweating, weight change, dental symptoms, scalp irritation, and recent illness.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing or swallowing, rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, marked redness, or feeling acutely unwell. Arrange prompt review for a lump with persistent hoarseness, unexplained weight loss, drenching night sweats, or a lump above the collarbone. These features do not diagnose cancer, but they should not be ignored.
