Lump below the skull on the neck: what to know

At the base of the skull are muscles, tendons, nerves, skin, and lymph nodes that drain parts of the scalp and upper neck. A blocked skin gland, scalp irritation, or a recent ear or throat problem can make a small tender swelling noticeable. Muscle tension may cause a tight band or sore area, but a separate nodule should be examined if it remains.
