How to interpret the example

A child may first have a runny nose or mild fever, then wake with a seal-like cough and a raspy voice. The key observation is what happens between coughs. Comfortable breathing, normal interaction, and the ability to drink are different from struggling for each breath. A squeaky or high-pitched sound on breathing in, especially while resting, is called stridor and deserves closer attention.

Sit the child upright, keep them calm, and offer a drink if swallowing is comfortable. Watch the chest and neck for pulling in, listen for noise while they are settled, and keep smoke away.
