Can Croup Cough Spread to Adults?

Croup commonly causes a barking cough, a hoarse voice, and a harsh, high-pitched sound when breathing in. The infection passes through respiratory droplets and contaminated hands or surfaces. An adult exposed to the same virus may have milder cold symptoms rather than the distinctive bark, because adult airways are larger. Croup-like symptoms in an adult still deserve attention because other airway or chest conditions can produce noisy breathing. A cough without the typical upper-airway sound is not enough to identify croup; the timing, voice change, breathing pattern, and examination all matter.

Keep the unwell person away from close contact while fever or active respiratory symptoms continue, especially around infants and people with breathing problems. Wash hands after wiping a nose, coughing, or handling used tissues; clean frequently touched surfaces; and avoid sharing cups, utensils, towels, or pillows. Encourage calm breathing and fluids if swallowing is comfortable. Follow the clinician’s instructions for any prescribed treatment. Do not use someone else’s inhaler or give a child over-the-counter cough medicine without checking that it is suitable.

Seek urgent medical help for noisy breathing while resting, visible pulling in of the skin between the ribs or at the neck, blue or grey lips, severe difficulty speaking or feeding, unusual drowsiness, drooling with trouble swallowing, or a person who is struggling to breathe. Arrange prompt medical assessment when an adult develops a new barking cough with hoarseness or a high-pitched inhaling sound, when symptoms are worsening, or when a cough lasts beyond the expected infection. A clinician can distinguish croup-like airway swelling from asthma, acute bronchitis, or another cause of cough.

Ask whether the breathing sound is coming from the upper airway or chest, whether the illness is likely to be infectious, and which symptoms should trigger emergency help. You can also ask how long to avoid close contact, whether any regular medicines should continue, and what care is appropriate for other household members.
