Nebuliser Treatment

Nebuliser treatment turns prescribed liquid medicine into a mist that can be breathed into the lungs.

A mask or mouthpiece delivers the mist while you sit upright and breathe normally. The medicine and dose depend on the breathing problem, age, current symptoms and clinical assessment.

Some inhaled medicines can ease airway tightening during the treatment or shortly afterwards, while others have a different purpose. Staff reassess breathing effort, speech, oxygen level where appropriate and response before deciding on next steps.

Side effects depend on the medicine used. Shakiness, a faster heartbeat, headache, dry mouth or throat irritation can happen with some treatments. Tell staff promptly about chest pain, marked dizziness, worsening breathlessness or a reaction that concerns you.

Nebulisation is often a short, supervised treatment rather than a long-term medicine plan. Some people need repeated treatments during an acute episode; others are switched to an inhaler or another approach once symptoms are controlled.

Use only the medicine and equipment plan provided for you. A nebuliser is a delivery device, not a diagnosis or a substitute for assessment. Do not share masks, tubing or medicine containers, and follow cleaning instructions carefully.

A clinician may use nebulisation when inhaled medicine is needed and a person is too breathless, very young, distressed or unable to use an inhaler effectively. Asthma can present with wheezing and breathlessness, but those symptoms also need assessment for other causes.

The prescribed liquid is placed in the chamber and connected to the device. You breathe the mist through a fitted mask or mouthpiece until the chamber is empty. The clinician listens to the chest, observes work of breathing and reviews the response.

Follow the discharge plan exactly, including any inhalers and monitoring advice. Rest if needed and avoid smoke or strong fumes while airways are irritated. Improvement does not remove the need to return if symptoms recur or worsen.

Seek urgent medical care for severe or increasing breathlessness, blue or grey lips, difficulty speaking in full sentences, drowsiness, chest pain, or a child who is struggling to feed because of breathing. Do not wait for home nebulisation to solve these signs.

For many people, an inhaler used with a spacer can deliver prescribed medicine effectively. The suitable option depends on the medicine, severity of symptoms, coordination and ability to take a deep breath. A clinician should demonstrate the chosen technique.
