What does transvaginal ultrasound treat?

A slim covered probe is placed gently in the vagina to produce detailed images of the womb, womb lining, ovaries, and nearby structures. The scan can help investigate pelvic pain, unusual bleeding, fertility concerns, or early pregnancy symptoms. Findings may support assessment of ovarian cysts, miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, or changes in the womb lining, but the scan itself does not remove a cyst or cure a pregnancy complication. Follow the imaging centre's instructions, including whether your bladder should be empty or partly full. Tell the sonographer if insertion may be painful, if you are bleeding, or if you might be pregnant. You can ask for an explanation before the probe is inserted and request a pause. Results may need to be discussed with the clinician who arranged the scan. Seek urgent care for severe one-sided pelvic pain, fainting, shoulder-tip pain, or heavy bleeding, especially if pregnancy is possible. Contact the imaging centre or your clinician if pain or bleeding begins after the examination and does not settle.
