What causes postnasal drip?

Allergic Rhinitis can swell the nasal lining and increase watery mucus. Sinusitis or Chronic Sinusitis may cause inflammation and thicker discharge. Colds, dry air, smoke, dust, and changes in temperature can also irritate the nose. Acid Reflux may irritate the throat and create a similar need to clear it, even when nasal mucus is not the main problem.

You may feel mucus at the back of the throat, need to swallow or clear your throat, cough more when lying down, or notice a hoarse voice. The sensation can occur with a blocked or runny nose, but throat clearing alone does not identify one cause.

Notice whether symptoms follow dust, pets, meals, lying down, seasonal changes, or a recent cold. Saline nasal rinsing with safe prepared water, good hydration, and avoiding smoke may reduce irritation. A clinician or pharmacist can advise whether an allergy treatment or nasal medicine fits your symptoms; use decongestant sprays only as directed because prolonged use can worsen blockage.

Arrange assessment if symptoms persist, recur frequently, or affect sleep. Treatment should target the cause, such as allergy, sinus inflammation, or reflux, rather than mucus alone.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, inability to swallow fluids, severe headache with a stiff neck, or sudden confusion. Arrange prompt review for one-sided foul-smelling discharge, facial swelling, severe facial pain, or symptoms that continue despite self-care.

Ask whether your symptoms fit allergy, sinus inflammation, infection, or reflux; whether your nose and throat need examination; which rinse or medicine is suitable; and what changes should prompt urgent care.
