What should you know about topical treatment for milia?

Milia are tiny, firm, white or skin-coloured cysts formed from trapped keratin just beneath the surface. They are common around the eyelids and cheeks and are different from ordinary whiteheads. A clinician may suggest a topical retinoid to support cell turnover when milia are recurrent or widespread. Improvement can be gradual, and sensitive eyelid skin needs especially careful instructions.

Cleanse gently, use non-comedogenic moisturiser, and avoid heavy products that seem to coincide with new bumps. Do not pierce, scrape, or squeeze milia, particularly near the eyes; this can injure skin and leave marks. Keep retinoids away from the eyelid margin unless specifically prescribed there, and stop or contact the prescriber if burning, swelling, or persistent peeling develops. A trained professional can remove a persistent cyst using a controlled procedure such as curettage and cautery.

Arrange an examination if bumps are painful, inflamed, rapidly changing, clustered around the eye, or unlike your usual milia.
