Sinus pressure in the face: what to know

Swollen tissue near the sinus openings can interfere with drainage and cause heaviness across the cheeks, forehead, or bridge of the nose. Sinusitis may present with congestion, coloured discharge, reduced smell, tenderness, or fever. Dental inflammation can cause one-sided cheek pain. Migraine may cause facial pressure with nausea or sensitivity to light. Observe the exact location, side, nasal changes, tooth symptoms, and whether bending forward changes the discomfort.

Keep fluids nearby, rest, and apply a warm compress to the uncomfortable area. Saline spray may ease dryness and loosen secretions. For a nasal rinse, use sterile, distilled, or boiled and cooled water and follow cleaning instructions. Avoid smoking and strong odours. Ask a pharmacist about pain relief or a nasal medicine, especially if you have other illnesses, take regular medicines, or are pregnant. Do not start antibiotics without an assessment.

Seek urgent care if facial pressure comes with eye swelling, vision changes, severe headache, confusion, a stiff neck, or marked weakness. Arrange an appointment for persistent symptoms, repeated attacks, severe one-sided pain, fever, or tooth pain. A clinician may need to examine your nose, face, teeth, and eyes to identify the source.

Ask whether the symptoms fit sinusitis, migraine, or a dental cause, and which treatment is safest for you. Tell the clinician about allergies, recent illness, dental work, discharge, fever, and any changes in vision or smell.
