Short answer

Seasonal hair loss means increased shedding noticed at a certain time of year, but persistent, patchy, or patterned loss needs a clinical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Look for
Diffuse shedding versus patches, breakage, or a widening part
Useful record
Photos and the timing of illness, stress, diet, or medication changes
Review needed
Sudden, persistent, painful, scaly, or patchy loss

Making sense of shedding

Hair growth moves through repeating phases, so more hairs can enter the shedding phase after a delayed trigger such as illness, emotional strain, major weight change, nutritional deficiency, or a change in hormones. A seasonal pattern may be noticed at the same time each year, but timing alone cannot identify the cause. Telogen effluvium is one possible explanation when diffuse shedding follows a trigger.

A receding hairline or widening part can fit pattern hair loss, while smooth round patches may fit alopecia areata. Scale, broken hairs, or an inflamed scalp can point toward scalp ringworm. Tight styles can contribute to traction alopecia. These patterns need different evaluations.

What you can do now

Take consistent photos of the hairline, part, and crown under similar lighting, and note when shedding began and what happened in the preceding months. Handle hair gently, loosen tight styles, limit repeated high heat or chemical processing, and eat regular balanced meals. Do not start prescription treatment or high-dose supplements without discussing the reason and possible interactions with a clinician.

A clinician may examine the scalp and hair shafts and ask about illness, medicines, periods, thyroid symptoms, diet, and family pattern. The plan depends on whether the issue is shedding, breakage, or reduced density.

When to seek care

Arrange assessment when shedding is sudden, continuing, or accompanied by patchy loss, scalp pain, scaling, sores, broken hairs, or eyebrow loss. Seek prompt care for a rapidly inflamed scalp or signs of infection. Earlier review helps distinguish temporary shedding from pattern loss or a condition that needs targeted treatment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your pattern suggests telogen effluvium, pattern hair loss, alopecia areata, infection, or traction; whether tests are appropriate; and which treatments are safe with your medicines and health history.

Questions people ask

Is seasonal hair loss always temporary?

No. A seasonal pattern may be temporary, but ongoing shedding or reduced density can reflect another condition and should be assessed.

Can tight hairstyles cause hair loss?

Repeated pulling can contribute to traction alopecia, especially when styles cause tenderness, broken hairs, or thinning along the hairline.
