Red puffer and asthma: what to know

How the structures involved in Asthma differ from normal

Short answer

A red puffer may be an asthma reliever, but inhaler colours are not standard, so check its name and follow your personal asthma plan.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Do not rely on
Inhaler colour alone; colours vary between products.

How often symptoms occur and how often the reliever is needed.

What the puffer may do

Asthma narrows and inflames the airways, causing episodes of [Wheezing](/symptoms/wheezing/), [Cough](/symptoms/cough/) or [Chest Tightness](/symptoms/chest-tightness/). A reliever inhaler is intended to open narrowed airways quickly. A preventer is used regularly to reduce airway inflammation and is not the same medicine, even if its device looks similar.

Do not identify an inhaler by colour alone. Read the label, check the active ingredient and ask a pharmacist or clinician if the device is unfamiliar. Dust mites, pollen and nasal allergy can aggravate symptoms; [Allergic Rhinitis](/conditions/allergic-rhinitis/) and [House Dust Mite Allergy](/conditions/house-dust-mite-allergy/) may be relevant for some people.

Using asthma treatment safely

Use the inhaler exactly as prescribed and have your technique checked regularly. A spacer can make some metered-dose inhalers easier to use. Keep a written asthma action plan, notice how often you need the reliever, and arrange review if symptoms are waking you, limiting activity or returning soon after treatment.

If symptoms are not controlled by your plan, seek medical advice rather than repeatedly adding doses on your own. A [Nebuliser Treatment](/treatments/acute-and-urgent-care/nebuliser-treatment/) may be used by healthcare professionals in some acute situations, but it is not a substitute for an individual plan.

When to seek urgent help

Follow your action plan and seek urgent help if breathing is very difficult, you cannot speak comfortably, your lips look blue or grey, you become drowsy, or the reliever is not helping. Sit upright, stay with the person and use the prescribed emergency steps while help is coming. A severe attack can worsen quickly.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Is this inhaler a reliever or preventer? Can you watch my technique? When should I use a spacer? What exact symptoms mean I should call emergency services?
