Reason for transvaginal ultrasound

The probe is covered and gently placed in the vagina, allowing the sonographer to view the womb, its lining, cervix, ovaries, and surrounding structures. The scan may help investigate pelvic pain, unusual bleeding, difficulty becoming pregnant, early pregnancy concerns, or a suspected Ovarian Cyst. It can also show findings that need another test, such as Diagnostic Hysteroscopy; it does not by itself explain every symptom or confirm every diagnosis.

Follow the clinic's instructions about your bladder and tell the team if you may be pregnant, have pelvic pain, or would prefer a chaperone. You can ask the sonographer to explain each step and pause if the examination is uncomfortable. The scan usually takes place in a private room, and you can discuss alternatives if an internal examination is not suitable for you.

Seek urgent medical help for severe one-sided pain, faintness, shoulder-tip pain, or bleeding when pregnancy is possible, because Ectopic Pregnancy needs rapid assessment. After the scan, seek advice for severe pain, heavy bleeding, fever, or feeling unwell.
